Each year the club recognizes outstanding contributions to your Club with perpetual trophies. The recipients of these awards are nominated by the general membership and/or the Race Committee. At its December Meeting, the Board of Governors selects the year's recipients of these awards by secret ballot from those nominated. The boating awards are selected by the Race Committee. The trophies are awarded at the Awards Banquet held in early January.

  • Josh Green Award for Meritus Service

    • To Be Awarded at the Awards Banquet and presented by the award year Commodore

      The Josh Green Award

      Meritorious Service Award

The Josh Green Award was deeded in 1967 to the Jackson Yacht Club in memory of the founder of the Green family in Mississippi, Joshua Green, who lived from 1811 to 1887. The original cup was destroyed in the 1998 fire and replaced by the Green family including 1966 Commodore Josh Green. According to the terms of the Deed of Gift, the award is presented to “that member of the Jackson Yacht Club who has excelled all others in meritorious service to the Club, sportsmanship and seamanship; such determination to be upon achievements since the last awarding of this trophy”. The Josh Green Award is conferred on the nominee selected by a panel made up of the Board of Governors and the Fleet Captains of the Fleets officially recognized by the Board.

  • Caldwell Memorial Cup for Couples Contribution

    • To Be Awarded at the Awards Banquet and presented by the award year Commodore

The Gene & Lydy Caldwell Memorial Cup

      Couples Service Award

The Gene & Lydy Caldwell Memorial Cup was deeded to the Jackson Yacht Club in honor of 1980 Commodore Eugene Caldwell and his wife Lydy (Elizabeth Josephine Becker Henley Caldwell). Commodore Caldwell was known for his creativity in developing unique boating activities designed to involve families; the most notable of which being “Caldwell’s Confusion.” The event was aptly named since no member since has ever been able to recreate it. According to the terms of the Deed of Gift, the award is presented to “the couple who has been outstanding in their contributions to the club during the past year”. The Caldwell Cup is awarded to the nominee couple selected by the Board of Governors. By tradition, the cup is always presented filled with ice and a bottle of fine champagne.

  • Kathy Walls Douglas Spirit Award for Ladies Service

    • To Be Awarded at the Awards Banquet and presented by the President of the Ladies Fleet

The Kathy Walls Douglas Spirit Award

      Ladies Service Award

This award goes to a woman who has shown the kind of welcoming presence The Jackson Yacht Club embraces. It is being created to honor the memory of a woman who embodied the social graces to the ultimate degree. In her quiet, genuine and gracious way, Kathy Walls Douglas modeled for us a way to be inclusive and warm. Over the years, she personally contributed much as a member of Ladies Fleet. She had many friends at JYC, and she went out of her way to make new members feel welcome. Too soon gone and greatly missed, the members of Ladies Fleet voted unanimously at a called meeting August 1, 2019, to sponsor and provide a perpetual trophy bearing her name. A trophy has been commissioned and is ready for nominations from the total JYC membership. While members of Ladies Fleet are eligible to be nominated for the trophy, all women in good standing with The Jackson Yacht Club are eligible. The winner each year will be the nominee who receives the most votes from the Ladies Fleet membership. The Ladies Fleet requests that the perpetual trophy be presented at the JYC Awards Banquet by the president of Ladies Fleet each year. The beautiful glass trophy was created and donated by JYC Member Candy Spurzem.

  • Dick Fritz Memorial Trophy for Boating Distinction

    • To Be Awarded at the Awards Banquet and presented by the award year Race Committee Chairman

      The Dick Fritz Memorial Trophy

      Boating Distinction Award

The (Richard) Dick Fritz Memorial trophy is a gift to the Jackson Yacht Club from Catalina Fleet 29. Dick Fritz joined the Yacht Club in 1968 and during his 34 years served on numerous committees, as a board member, as a flag officer and as the Commodore in 1974. Dick was a true sportsman and one of the most consistent sailors in the racing fleet. He was on the starting line rain or shine wind or calm and more often than not at the front of the fleet. In recognition of Dick’s numerous contributions to the Jackson Yacht Club and in his memory the trophy should be presented annually to the person or persons who by their actions contribute most to the boating activities in the Club. This contribution can be through organization, running or participating in boating activities throughout the year. The Race Committee should make the final selection and presentation. The Race Committee chairman shall solicit nominations from the general membership of the Jackson Yacht Club and the final candidate then selected by the chairman of the Race Committee and at least two other members of the committee.

  • Jim O'Daniels Memorial Trophy for Best Crew

    • To Be Awarded at the Awards Banquet and presented by the award year Race Committee Chairman

      Jim O’Daniel Memorial Trophy

      Best Crew Award

The Jim O’Daniel Memorial Trophy is gifted to the Jackson Yacht Club by Robert J. Muller. Jim was a member of JYC for almost twenty years until August 3, 2019 when, while leading a bicycle race, he was tragically hit by a car and killed at the age of 50. The award depicts a Spartan Warrior on a piano black base. The statue is a symbol of the ancient Spartan’s rigorous training in sports, teamwork, tactics, and academics. Jim epitomized these traits, and they are found in all successful competitive sailors.

Kent Danielson taught Jim to sail at JYC and he crewed on many boats; racing with David Scruggs and all of the J22 sailors at JYC and around the country. Jim and I sailed in the J22 for many years as a crew of 2, winning the JYC J22 Series 5 times. Jim was my boat partner and friend, competing with me in several World and National Championship regattas in both the J22 and Viper640. Jim also crewed with me in many GYA Capdevielle and Lipton regattas in both the Flying Scot (which he disliked) and the Viper640. Jim won the Best Crew Award several times, notably in 2009 when we won our first JYC Series. Racing sailboats was Jim’s favorite pastime for many years, always smiling and laughing, while at the same time he was fiercely competitive on the racecourse. Jim was also a brilliant PhD engineer, recognized worldwide as an expert in “blowing s**t up”; which was Jim’s description of his classified work in the computer modeling of explosions for the US Army.

This trophy is to be awarded by the Race Committee annually to the sailor deemed to be the Best Crew while sailboat racing in the previous year. “The person who receives this award should personify Jim’s optimistic attitude, desire to learn, competitiveness, teamwork and excellence in the sport of sailing”
