Swim Team

The JYC Sunfish Swim Team offers an amazing opportunity for our youth to grow closer as friends, as well as learning and competing in a healthy sport in which they can participate their entire life. The team also offers an opportunity for forging new friendships among the team parents.

The Sunfish compete in the Jackson Swim Association (JSA) recreational swim league each June. Any children 18 & under as of June 1 are welcome to participate. Young children should be able to swim across a pool nearly unassisted. There is no need to know the competitive strokes ahead of time. Our youth coaches will teach that part and our swimmers have a blast learning from the "big kids", forming bonds of friendship that help bridge the gap of age in our JYC family. Registration opens each year in February and swimmers will have an opportunity to try on team suits and learn about necessary gear (e.g., goggles) in late March. Practices begin after school in early/mid-May as soon as the pool is warm enough to prevent shivering purple lips - the kids would endure it enthusiastically, but parents don't appreciate it. After Memorial Day, the team practices Tuesday to Friday mornings with two 1-hour sessions at 9:00 (primarily younger swimmers) and 10:15 (older swimmers). We also offer a couple of after-work sessions each week for those who cannot manage to get the kids to the pool during the day, though these sessions frequently yield to our unpredictable summer afternoon weather. The team competes in dual/tri-meets against 1 or 2 other teams each Monday in June, with the season culminating in the JSA City Meet Championship, typically the last Saturday in June.

JYC has become the premier venue for the season meets with our amazing view and the fun and welcoming atmosphere our team creates - our famous JYC Bushwhackers don't hurt a bit, either.

Non-members are welcome to participate in this program, which is supported in part by the JYC Foundation. So bring a friend! Contact the office or [email protected] for more information.
